Carved where it grew
Welcome to Wulfstan - my journey in traditional carving, where every piece is humbly rescued from the fireplace. From there it's axe and knife: just tool marks left honest. What comes off the block is functional art. Intended to be held and used daily.
I want to promote and endorse all those in the crafts and encourage those who have not yet discovered their craft to try them out. Like many I have a hard thinking, digital day job. To counter this, I believe craft is an essential healing human pursuit.
Cooking Spoons & Spatulas
Bowls
I came to carving from the lathe, and the bowls tell that story. Turned work taught me precision; the axe and gouge gave me freedom. These larger pieces follow the tree rather than the tool — natural edges, resin-filled faults, forms that keep the memory of the trunk they were split from.
Playful Pieces
Not everything needs to be serious. Mushroom scoops that stand on the shelf like a row of toadstools, little carved figures given away at Christmas. Small work that gets people who’d never look twice at craft picking things up and smiling.

The Maker
I’m Matt Green, a green woodworker in the White Peak District. I’m on a journey to create ever more beautiful spoons, bowls, furniture and functional treen from freshly felled local timber. In the pursuit to make myself and others smile when they use these hand crafted items.
The name Wulfstan is Old English — wolf stone — a nod to the long history of this landscape and of the craft itself. It’s the name I’ve given to my practice here in the woods around Bakewell. People have carved green wood in these hills for as long as there have been hills to live in. Yet we need hand crafted items more than ever to help us connect to the trees, landscape and people around us.

In an age of automation and the identical, I want to go back to the old ways of making things people still need — and I want the person holding a piece to feel the difference in their hands.
